I will always love the city of Paris.
I lived there for a few months and try to go back every year. When Iāve been away too long, I start to miss its energy and end up impulsively booking a flight. Like New York, thereās always something happening. Unlike New York, Paris hasnāt been swallowed by the wave of mass consumerism or loss of individuality. It still feels tasteful, intentional, hospitable, and romantic. I leave every trip feeling light and inspired.
Over time, I started getting a lot of texts asking for Paris recommendations, so I kept a running list in a Google Doc Iād send around to friends. Eventually, that doc made its way a few circles beyond my own, and itās what inspired me to start posting on Substack.
I think of this guide as the āfirst layerā to Paris.
If you're keen on visiting the iconic, institutional spots that are genuinely worth it, this list has you covered. Youāll find all the classics, plus a few personal favorites. And Iāll never recommend a classic I donāt actually enjoy (unless Iām giving you my honest take).
At the top, Iāve starred (ā) my absolute favorites.
If you're already familiar with the city, my āsecond layerā recs ā cool, local favorites, seasonal restaurants, and spots I return to every time ā are in the guides below.
